What do I need to sell my gold or silver?

To sell your gold or silver pieces, you need to present a valid identification document, such as your ID card, current passport, or foreigner’s residence card if you are from another country. These documents are necessary to verify your identity and comply with legal requirements in our transactions.

What is the minimum quantity or weight I can sell?

In general, you can sell any type of gold piece, regardless of its weight or size, such as broken jewelry, loose coins, small fragments, or nuggets. This is not the same for silver, as it is a metal with much less liquidity, high volatility, and storage difficulties. If the piece is too lightweight or not sufficiently pure, we may not be interested in it.

How much gold can be sold without declaring taxes?

Whenever you have income from economic activities that exceed 1,000 euros per year, you are obliged to declare these earnings. The sale of gold is subject to fulfilling certain tax obligations, and as the seller, you are required to declare the profits obtained from the sale of gold in your income tax return. Therefore, the amount of gold that can be sold without declaring is zero.

How is the appraisal process?

The gold appraisal process involves a series of steps that experts follow to determine the value of a gold item. Here’s an explanation of how this process generally works:

    • Gold Acid Test: This test checks whether the item is genuine gold or a fake replica. It involves rubbing a part of the jewelry on an Arkansas stone, also known as a touchstone, so that a tiny sample of gold remains on the stone. This process doesn’t cause any harm to the piece, as the sample is completely imperceptible to the human eye. Subsequently, a drop of acid is applied to the stone to observe the reaction and determine the purity and quality of the gold.
    • Spectrometer: The piece is then subjected to the effects of an X-ray gun. This gun can almost instantly analyze the percentage and content of gold and other metals in the stone, such as silver or copper. The content is thoroughly analyzed and detailed, making it one of the most reliable techniques for determining the exact composition of a piece of jewelry.
    • Densimeter: This process is only valid for pieces that are not set with stones and are not hollow, such as coins or ingots. Additionally, it can only be used if it has been confirmed previously that the piece is gold with the acid test. This machine relies on Archimedes principle to obtain the specific weight of the piece. First, it is weighed in the air, and then in the water, calculating the value of the specific weight.

By following this procedure, the exact value of a gold piece is determined based on its composition.

What are the carats of gold?

Carats are a measure of purity and quality used to describe gold and other precious metals. Carats are employed to indicate the proportion of pure gold in a piece of precious metal in relation to other metals or alloys present.

    1. 24-carat gold (24K): 24-carat gold is 100% pure gold. This means it contains no other metal in its composition. It is extremely soft and malleable, making it less suitable for crafting jewelry and items that need to be durable, as it tends to bend and scratch easily.
    2. 18-carat gold (18K): 18-carat gold contains 75% pure gold and 25% other metals, such as silver, copper, or others, which are used to harden the alloy. 18K gold is a popular choice for jewelry manufacturing as it combines the beauty of pure gold with increased durability.
    3. 14-carat gold (14K): 14-carat gold contains 58.3% pure gold and 41.7% other metals. It is a common choice in jewelry manufacturing in many places as it offers a good balance between the beauty of gold and resistance to abrasion.
    4. 10-carat gold (10K): 10-carat gold contains 41.7% pure gold and 58.3% other metals. It has less pure gold than 18K and 14K options, making it less expensive but also less valuable and less brilliant in appearance.

It’s important to note that the higher the carat number, the higher the content of pure gold, and therefore, the higher the value and purity of the metal. However, as the content of pure gold increases, the alloy may become softer and less durable, so the choice of carat number will depend on the purpose of the jewelry piece or its intended use.
